Our Services

As a consultant specifically for the veterinary profession, I am in a position to know the rules and develop practical ways to apply them at your hospital. Therefore, you can have a hospital safety program that complies with OSHA's Standards without a major personal time investment. But perhaps the best part of my program is how simple it is to keep up - most hospitals can stay in compliance with less than two hours a month!

Since every hospital is different and some need more assistance than others, there are several levels of service available.

The Complete Safety Implementation Program

As the name implies the complete program is just that-complete!  I'll observe the hospital in action then document the required programs for compliance.  Here's what you get for your money:
  • I'll start with a comprehensive safety assessment of the hospital's procedures and facilities. I'll provide a written report of the conditions as well as recommendations for an appropriate solution to any situations that violate safety principles or OSHA Standards . This report will meet OSHA's requirement for a written hazard assessment of working condition.

  • You'll receive an electronic Safety Manual that's customized specifically for your hospital. The safety manual will contain all the written plans and training materials needed to complete a comprehensive safety program.

  • I'll furnish all documents, plans, posters, pamphlets, and labels necessary for compliance.  If additional safety equipment  (such as gloves or eyewash devices) is required, a source will be provided for procurement through your regular process.

  • One of the most time consuming parts of OSHA compliance is completing the inventory of hazardous materials that is required by the Hazard Communication Standard. But don't worry, I'll do this too! Only current, in-use materials will be included in the program. Dated or obsolete materials will be identified or collected for your disposal.

  • Proper identification of secondary chemical containers is easy because I'll supply specially designed labels that are easy to understand.

  • An assessment of the Safety Data Sheet library will made and the library will be organized in an easy-to-use manner. If you don't have one of the SDSs you need, don't worry - I'll start the process of locating them for you.

  • Since the cornerstone of any safety program is staff awareness, I'll present a two hour staff safety training session that covers common hospital safety problems, reinforces the prevention methods that staff members can follow to protect themselves and informs each staff member of his or her responsibilities and rights under the Occupational Safety & Health Act. Twenty-five staff training workbooks and 19 safety videos will be provided for use in training future employees!

  • To keep you current, this service includes a one year subscription to The Veterinary Safety & Health Digest. The Digest is a bimonthly newsletter for the veterinary profession containing topics related to the safety and health of the veterinary hospital staff with a particular emphasis on complying with OSHA requirements.

  • Finally, to handle situations that may arise in the future, I've included twelve months of unlimited telephone or email support to your hospital for discussing any safety related issue.

The fee for this service in most hospitals is $4,250 plus the direct travel and lodging expenses for the consultant. It usually requires two days on-site to implement.*

Safety Review & Staff Training Program

A Controlled Drug Program Analysis

A comprehensive review of the hospital's controlled drug program for compliance with the Controlled Substance Act and DEA requirements.  This service includes:

  • A detailed review and detailed report of the controlled drug procedures and policies.
  • Evaluation of the physical and procedural security of controlled drugs, including access controls.
  • Analysis of purchasing and dispensing records (logs) to identify potential problems that may indicate non-compliance or possible diversion.
  • An audit trail analysis for a select number of “log entries” to verify consistency between logs and medical records.
  • A staff training session to present best practices and regulatory requirements for staff members with access to controlled drugs.
  • A copy of The Complete Veterinary Practice Controlling Controlled Drugs Manual including customizable examples of logs and forms.
  • Twelve months of unlimited telephone or email support to your hospital for discussing any controlled drug related issue.

* Note: Quoted fees for consultation programs are based on a small to medium sized hospital (25 or fewer staff members) with a single facility location. If your hospital is larger, has multiple facilities or your needs are more complex than the plans outlined here, just give us a call and we can prepare a proposal suited to just your needs!
